The Day We Fight Back

Today is Tuesday 11th February 2014 and today, we fight back. For months now we have been hearing of terrible abuses of power from our government and others around the world thanks to the bravery of Edward Snowden. The NSA and GCHQ are spying on our internet activity, emails, phone calls, txt messages and getting access to popular websites such as Facebook to see who you are talking to. The mainstream political parties will NOT change this. Between them they have brought us into this sur...

Time for a change in drug laws

The recent death of Phillip Seymour Hoffman from a drug overdose has sparked another debate about drug laws, most recently through Russell Brand's comment piece for The Guardian[1], which at the time of writing has generated over two thousand comments just on The Guardian's website. Russell hits the nail on the head here: People are going to use drugs; no self-respecting drug addict is even remotely deterred by prohibition. What prohibition achieves is an unregulated, criminal-controlled, ...

Holidays During Term Time

Yet again we have seen the issue of parents taking their children out of school in term time appear in the press, this time in the case of Stewart and Natasha Sutherland who took their daughters out of school in September 2013 and were fined £630 for doing so [1]. Whilst I have sympathy for Stewart's predicament in that his work means he is absent at the times his children are on holiday, I do not agree with their reasoning for taking their daughters on holiday.  To quote the BBC News article...

Gala Coral Given (ANOTHER!) License In Bury

Last week Gala Coral were given another license to open a betting shop in Princess Parade in Bury.  This will be their third betting shop in Bury town centre and fifth in Bury.  Given that I worked for Coral for two and a half years I have a pretty good memory of where these shops are: Bolton Road Radcliffe Road 2 x The Rock They will no doubt be opening this third town centre shop to compete with Betfred, William Hill and Ladbrokes who are all in that particular area of the town cent...

Response to Derek Brooks

On Thursday 12th December 2013, a letter from former Conservative candidate Derek Brooks was printed in the Bury Times in relation to the protest again Elton Primary School being forced into Academy status. This is Derek's letter: As a grandparent, dropping off and collecting some of my older grandchildren once a week at school, it truly breaks my heart to see pictures in the Bury Times (December 5) of bewildered young pupils, outside Elton Primary School, holding protest placards. Shame ...

Why an 11% pay rise for MPs is ridiculous

Today it was confirmed that MPs would receive an 11% pay rise after the 2015 General Election[1]. This equates to a £7,300 pay rise bringing the total salary for an MP to £73,699. Let's put that in perspective with some figures shall we. Salary on minimum wage for 37.5 hours per week: £12,304.50 (£6.31 per hour)[2] Salary on living wage (outside London) for 37.5 hours per week: £14,917.50 (£7.65 per hour)[3] Salary on living wage (for London) for 37.5 hours per week: £17...

Save Bury Library

Bury Council intend to invest £75,000 in converting two thirds of Bury's library into a sculpture centre. This is a proposal that was not on the table in the public consultation earlier this year according to a recent Bury Times article. Clearly, this is a ridiculous waste of money from our Labour council and when the anger from the public is taken into consideration this proposal should be scrapped at the earliest opportunity. Having a sculpture centre in Bury could attract visitors and i...

Save Elton Primary School

Last night I attended the protest against Elton Primary School being forced to become an academy. It was great to see over a hundred people including parents and councillors attend to voice their anger at this ludicrous proposal. Elton Primary School was last inspected by Ofsted on 9th October 2013 and the following conclusions were made by Ofsted: The local authority statement of action is fit for purpose. The school's improvement plan is fit for purpose. The school may not appoi...
