Last week Gala Coral were given another license to open a betting shop in Princess Parade in Bury. This will be their third betting shop in Bury town centre and fifth in Bury. Given that I worked for Coral for two and a half years I have a pretty good memory of where these shops are:
- Bolton Road
- Radcliffe Road
- 2 x The Rock
They will no doubt be opening this third town centre shop to compete with Betfred, William Hill and Ladbrokes who are all in that particular area of the town centre but surely Bury Council must see we have more than enough betting shops already?
To do a quick count of just town centre shops, we have:
- 2 x Ladbrokes
- 3 x Betfred
- 2 x William Hill
- 2 x Coral
RR Planning, quite rightly, formally objected on behalf of companies that trade near to where Coral are planning to move into but this was ignored on the basis that the unit had been vacant for over a year. Given the tax that betting shops generate for local and national government, this isn’t really a surprise but this is yet again an example of our council ignoring what people want and, in this case, what people don’t want.
The Pirate Party UK has seven simple principles, the seventh of which is:
We will act on the basis of evidence, with the consent of society through
democracy, in the interests of all.
The evidence shows that there are already too many betting shops, this move certainly does not have the consent of society through democracy and is NOT in the interests of all.
